    Inguinal and Ventral Hernias

    dr-arias-hernias.verde

When we talk about abdominal wall hernias it is important to understand how this area of the body is composed and what happens when a hernia occurs.

Important organs are located inside the abdomen: solid organs like the spleen, liver, pancreas and kidneys; vascular structures like the aorta and cava; hollow viscera like the stomach, small intestine and large intestine (colon). These organs are protected by bone and muscle structures. The muscles are anchored or inserted into the bony structures, and are covered by a fibrous layer called the fascia, which gives the wall support.

A hernia occurs when there is a defect in the muscles and fascia. Through this defect fat and occasionally, bowel loops protrude. This may result in strangulation and intestinal perforations.

These wall defects are generally anatomical defects that must be repaired surgically.

    FAQ

Am I a candidate for Surgery?
If you have an inguinal hernia or a hernia in the abdominal wall where you have a scar of a previous surgery, you should be taken to surgical correction of this defect as you run a risk of incarceration if it is not corrected..

Can it be performed thru laparoscopy?
It usually can be done with laparoscopic procedure. It is the ideal approach in the case of bilateral hernias.
The surewgery is performed under general anesthesia. A 1 cm incision is done at the umbilical level and two other of 2.5 mm each in the lower abdomen. A reduction of the hernia is performed and a mesh is placed to cover the defects or hernias. These nettings are fixed with special mechanical sutures.

    Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery
    Faster recovery.
    Less painful.
Ideal for athletes, as they can quickly restart their sporting activity.
    Lower risk of infection.
Risk of relapse or recurrence of the hernia is 5% (the same for open surgery).
