    Solid Organ Surgery

The benefits of laparoscopic surgery have been transferred to more complex procedures. The specialized laparoscopy training of modern day surgeons has allowed them to approach surgeries on solid organs using this technique, with the same results as those done the traditional way. These are surgeries performed on the spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands and some procedures of the liver.
Without any doubt, laparoscopy has become the route of choice for procedures such as splenectomy (surgical removal of the spleen), and adrenalectomy (surgical removal of the adrenal gland). This method allows surgeons to reach and magnify areas that if performed thru an open surgery, would require large incisions and significant traction, leading to greater disability for patients.
It must be taken into account that these procedures should be performed by specialized groups, since they are technically complex, involving several different steps. These surgeries should be done by a specialist in advanced laparoscopy.

    Indications for Splenectomy

The procedure can be performed for benign or malignant hematological diseases. However, the best results have been presented in benign pathologies, including Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, and Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia, with over 80% response in disease control.

Indications for adrenalectomy or adrenal gland surgery

They range from incidental findings of an adrenal mass, called incidentaloma, to functional adrenal tumors. These may produce hormones that can cause changes in the individual’s different organs or systems.

    The laparoscopic pancreatic surgery

The laparoscopic pancreatic surgeries are gaining ground among experienced surgeons, given that it is a complex procedure. It is generally indicated for patients with solid tumors or cysts of the body and tail of the pancreas. Distal pancreatectomy can be performed with or without the preservation of the spleen. The results in literature show that laparoscopy is the route of choice, if performed by surgeons with adequate training.
